Sadly, none of the lead actress nominees for comedy/musical OR drama are petite. There aren't any petite actresses nominated for supporting TV roles either.

This is NOT a good year for petite actresses when it comes to Golden Globe nominations.

Golden Globes

The Golden Globe nominees have been announced, and let's just say that while there are petite nominees this year, the number has siginficantly dwindled. I will list the full list of petite acting nominees tomorrow.

And the Petite Emmy Nominees are...

The Prime Time Emmy nominations were announced yesterday. This year, the petite lead acting nominees are:

Comedy:

America Fererra (5'1"), Ugly Betty

Julia Louis-Dreyfuss (5'2 1/2"), The New Adventures of Old Christine

(Tina Fey is listed at 5'4 1/2", so not really petite)

Drama:

Sally Field (5'2"), Sons and Daughters

Holly Hunter (5'2"), Saving Grace

Movie/Miniseries:

Phylicia Rashad (5'4"), A Raisin in the Sun

Judi Dench (5'1"), Cranford

Looks like it's two nominees out of five for each leading actress category. Not too surprised at all. The Emmys will be handed out on September 21.

Best Actress Nominees' Heights

As we know, two of the five Best Actress nominees for this year's Academy Awards are petite. Julie Christie is 5'2", according to IMDB and Ellen Page is 5'1". But how tall are the other actresses?

Marion Cotillard, who is nominated for playing the very, very petite Edith Piaf (4'9"!!!) in La Vie en rose (known as La Môme in the Francophone communities) is 5'6 1/2"

Cate Blanchette, nominated for her role in Elizabeth, the Golden Age, is 5'8 1/2"

Laura Linney, nominated for her role in The Savages, is 5'7"

But what about the Best Supporting Actress? How tall are these ladies? Out of the five nominees, only Cate Blanchette (also nominated for I'm Not There) and Tilda Swinton have their heights listed on IMDB. And both are NOT PETITE.

But will a petite actress win this year? Petite actresses have captured the this category for the past two years (Helen Mirren, who won last year is 5'4" and Reese Witherspoon, who won in 2006 is 5'2" or 5'2 1/2" (IMDB lists her at 5'2 1/2", but she is often reported to be 5'2")) According to many, Julie Christie did a wonderful job playing a woman with Alzheimer's in Away From Her (which, by the way, was directed by the petite (and Canadian), Sarah Polley (5'2"). Sarah is also nominated this year, for adapted screenplay.), and totally deserves the win. However, we know that the Academy loves "real people" roles, so the winner may very well be the not petite Marion Cotillard.

Petite Golden Globe Nominees

This year, several petite actresses have been nominated for leading rols at this year's Golden Globes, which will air on January 13, 2008 (that is, is the writers' strike doesn't block the show from airing!) Petite nominees are (height based on IMDB unless otherwise noted):

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama

  • Jodie Foster, 5'3 1/2" for The Brave One
  • Julie Christie, 5'2" for Away From Her
The remaining three actresses are Cate Blanchette (5'8 1/2"), Angelina Jolie (5'8") and Keira Knightley (5'7")

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy

  • Ellen Page, 5'1" for Juno
  • Nikki Blonsky, 4'10" for Hairspray

The remaining three actresses are Helen Bonham Carter, Amy Adams and Marion Cottilard. These ladies are above 5'4" but two of them just squeaked past the current definition of peitte. Helen is listed as 5'4 1/2" and Amy Adams is 5'5" . Marion Cottilard is a bit taller, at 5'6 1/2"

Best Performance by an Actress In A Television Series - Drama

  • Patricia Arquette, 5'1 for Medium
  • Sally Field, 5'2 1/2" for Brothers and Sisters
  • Holly Hunter, 5'2" for Saving Grace

There are seven nominees in this category. Out of the remaining four nominees, only Minnie Driver is supermodel tall, at 5'10". The remaining are all listed at 5'5" according to IMDB.

Best Performance by an Actress In A Television Series - Musical Or Comedy

  • America Ferrera, 5'1" for Ugly Betty
  • Ana Friel, 5'2" for Pushing Daisies

The remaining three nominees are Tina Fey (5'4 1/2"), Christina Applegate (5'5") and Mary-Louise Parker (5'8")

Best Performance by an Actress In A Mini-series or Motion Picture Made for Television

  • Sissy Spacek, 5'2" for Pictures of Hollis Woods
This category is interesting, with the tallest height average out of all non-supporting actress categories. Bryce Dallas Howard and Debra Messing are 5'8" and Queen Latifah is 5'10". Ruth Wilson, nominated for Jane Eyre does not have a reported height on IMDB.
While many of the nominees are petite or just above petite, winners have historically been on the tall side. Will it be repeated this time, or will the petite/average-heighted woman sweep all leading actress categories? After all, there's at least one petite actress in each. We'll just have to wait and see. In any case, it's an honour to be nominated, so congratulations, ladies!
