Petite Designers Will Be Recognized When Pigs Fly: Poll

Question: Do you think we'll ever see a famous designer for petites?

13% said: Yes, but not without celebrity spokespeople

27% said: When they start thinking outside of the box when it comes to sizing

22% said: Yes, but not before a plus sized designer

36% said: When pigs fly.

I'm not too surprised that 36% chose "when pigs fly," are you? Why or why not? How do you think non-standard sized designers, particularly designers for petites need to market themselves? Or to make people understand that petites have "issues" too?

Don't forget to reply!

Thanks

March 2008 Survey Results

March Question: Where do you (generally) find clothes that fit?

46.5% said: The petite section/petite stores

22.5% said: Regular section/stores and then tailoring

18.3% said: The kids' section

7% said: Asian Malls/in Asia

5.6% said: I'm not petite so the answers above don't apply

What did you vote? Are you surprised/not surprised that almost half the people surveyed shop at the petite section/petite stores? What about shopping at Asian stores? If you live in a city with a larger Asian population, have you gone to places like Pacific Mall? Why or why not?

February 2008 Survey Results

Question: Do you sit on a cushion when you drive?

19% of you said: Yes, it definitely helps me see!

39% of you said: No, my car has an adjustable seat.

27% of you said: No, my sitting height is tall enough for me to see over.

13% of you said: No, I don't drive.

Survey results are now open for discussion. Do you think these results are reflect you and your friends? Would you pay extra for seats that can move up and down? For those of you who use cushions, do you find it comfortable, or do you use it because you don't want to pay extra for the seats?

A Quote from the January 2008 Survey

A reply I got from goth_iq on the Petite Power Livejournal group soon after I posted the question for January 2008:

My magazine would have sections of different model venues:

Petite all shapes
Average all shapes
Tall all shapes

With designer labels and places to find clothing for that patricular body type. Also interviews with the designers and their vision for their clothing line. Added tips and techniques to accentuate the woman and her body type along with accessories if they so choose...

I'd guess that most, if not all "regular people", that is, anyone who isn't an insider with the fashion industry would agree with her, but this is probably not the case with people who work in the industry, at least the majority. If the models in New York Fashion Week haven't changed all that much from the last few Fashion Weeks, then why would they accept "different sizes", especially on the runway?

January 2008 Survey Results

The Question: If you had your own fashion magazine, would you feature petite designers and petite models?

Results:

80% said: Of course! You want to be as open to different sizes as possible, right?

8 % said: It would depend on the designer. If it's something that will fit my mag's image, then sure!

0% said: No. A fashion magazine should only feature "mainstream" designers (i.e. designers who use tall, skinny girls)

4% said: I don't know. I'm not the magazine type.

8 % said: Other

November 2007 Survey Results

Last month, Shorty Stories asked: Why don't you think the fashion and retail industry understand the need for petites?

Here are your results:

22.9% said: They see that people don't buy, so they won't order it.
14.3% said: Age discrimination. Petite sizes are usually associated with ladies of a certain age.
11.4% said: Fashion and retail just don't like short people
31.4% said: They don't understand that going to the tailor is not good enough.
20.0% said: Other...please explain

Do you agree with these results?

December question: Reese Witherspoon is now the highest paid actress in Hollywood, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Do you think this is unusual, considering her height?

October Shorty Stories Survey Results

October question was: In the September issue of Petite Personal Shopper, it was mentioned that petite clothes are rarely photographed on (petite) models. Instead, they are usually product shots or tall models in "regular" sample sizes. Even when petite models are used, they're usually close to "average height" (i.e. 5'3" or 5'4") Do you think that's right?

77.8% of you said : No! I want to see petite clothes on TRUELY PETITE MODELS (i.e. shorter than 5'4")

6.7% of you said: Petites, please, but taller petite women...maybe even average height...no taller than 5'6" though.

2.2% of you said: Yes, it's fine. Clothes look better on taller, skinnier people, so it's either the tall models or product shots.

8.9% of you said: Well, as long as you try the clothes on and they look good, it should be fine.

4.4% of you said: It doesn't matter. I don't buy petites anyway

What do you think of the results? Surprised? Not surprised? Not that it's ever going to happen, but I'm hoping that blogs, websites, surveys, etc about the need for petites and other "non-standard" sizing will generate enough talk that media will truly cover it (in other words, not in a Best Way to Dress Your Figure type story.) Though we''ll probably have to wait until someone else takes over US Vogue. As I've said before, this isn't going to happen under Anna Wintour.

September Shorty Stories Survey Results

September Question: Do you have trouble finding shoes?

33.3% said: Yes I do! I'm size US 5 1/2 or smaller and there are few brands that sell my size!

2.4 % said: I'm smaller than US 5 1/2, but I do most of my shoe shopping online and/or on Asian stores

11.9% said: I have very small feet, but I get most of my shoes at kids' stores as I don't really wear dress shoes

28.6% said: I have "normal" sized feet (i.e. 6 US or larger)

4.8% said: I limit my shoes to certain brands, so no, I have no problems

19% said: Other

To be perfectly honest, I was a little suprised to see that a third of you had trouble finding shoes! I always thought that smaller-than-a US 6 foot was rather uncommon, even with petite women (which is why size 5 is so rare).

October Survey: When it comes to petite sizes, should designers/companies use petite models, "regular" models or product shots?

Shorty Stories Survey Results for July 2007: We're all beautiful...sort of...

Last month, Shorty Stories asked whether the media leads the public to believe that petite women can't be "beautiful" in an old-fashioned movie star way (e.g. Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, etc). Below are the results:

14.5% of those polled believed that petite actresses tend to be limited to cute, pretty, "spunky gal"/sidekick type roles, such as the roles that go to Reese Witherspoon

29.1% of you believed that petite women aren't limited to only cute/BFF type roles, but also play "sexy" too

20.0% of you believe agree that petite women aren't "classically beautiful" because the film and television industries are too cookie-cutter these days and every look is put into a certain box.

29.1% of you believe that everyone has a different standard of "beauty" and that "cute" and "pretty" can be "beautiful" too

7.3% did not agree with any of the choices above.

What do you think? Do you agree with these results? Do you think petite women can be "classically beautiful"? Elegant? Graceful? or will petites always be limited to "cute" and "pretty"?
