Did you know that there are pageants especially for petite women? They were started so that petite women could have a fairer chance in competition, since the "ideal contestant" is tall and slender. For example, the average Miss Universe winner, according to this USA Today article, is 5'11" while the average height of women in North America is around 5'4". Even Miss America is slightly taller than average, at 5'6 1/2", according to Wonderquest. What I found interesting is that the pageant definition of "petite" is slightly taller. They have a 5'6" or shorter requirement, according to this article (I guess the "beauty" definition of petite is two inches taller...I once participated in a "century of fashion" type fashion show and they requested women under 5'6" and smaller than a size 6 because not-tall women fit vintage clothes better) But winners aren't always on the tall side of petite (or even average height). The most recent Miss Canada Petite, Valerie Rodriguez, is 4'11"!
Have you ever participated in a pageant? Would you participate? Do you think they should have special pageants for petites?
P.S. September Survey: Do you have trouble finding shoes? is still up!
P.P.S: Congrats to petite Emmy winners, America Ferrera (5'1"), Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, Sally Field (5'2"), Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series and Helen Mirren (5'4"), Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie.
