A Story from Patience

I recently received this e-mail from Patience, describing her experience as a petite woman:

I'm a 28 year old black female; 5ft, 106. I mentioned my ethnicity because it has played a role in my life as relates to petiteness. As a youth, it was first believed I would be tall! Then one day I recall my mother (5'7"ish) mentioning that she thought I might be "petite." I had no idea what that meant and it was tough for her to explain. By the time I was 16, and hadn't grown for four years, I became very clear on what petite meant.

At that age, I really suffered alot. I felt like I wasn't "growing up"; there were other girls who were, remarkably, smaller than I, but that wasn't the majority. I did the cutting, the journaling, all of that. My issue was exacerbated by the fact that in the black community, it's all about being "thick" - big butt, big legs, etc. Well, my legs actually are slightly larger than average, and longer, but I was not "thick; this mentality is so entrenched that anyone who isn't that size is seen as an anomaly. Ever listened to that comedian Mo'Nique? The attitude she has toward thin women pretty much encapsulates this mentality. So I got to feel like I wasn't "a real black girl."

Anywho, by about college I'd had a few dawnings. For one, I don't mind saying I came out as a lesbian, and began realizing that if I could see a variety of women as attractive, others could too, and that meant I could be within the real of cuteness. I also realized at that point that there was a group of people who considered petites a commodityfetish. Go figure.

Fastforward to now. Being an Aquarian, I'm known for my forward style and for treating my outfits like art. I'm able to find casual street clothes easily at places like Urban Outfitters; vintage stores also are awesome because people were smaller then. Guess is fab, their smalls are CRAZY small lol. For work: I enjoy Tahari suits (their petites are sooooo nice) used to like Petite Sophisticate and have some luck with the Macy's petites in general.

All in all, I love being petite. I feel extra dainty and girlie and special. I love that I can ball up and get into small spaces. One thing that I HATE HATE HATE though: There remains this attitude that it's ok to hate on small people.

I am SO annoyed with this anti-skinny-model thing - yeah, some of those girls need help, but don't assume every woman who's small is "troubled." I hate the presumption that everyone in America is fat - as reflected in the decrease of XS sizes and the increase in XXXLs. I also get annoyed with vanity sizing, don't they ever realize that there are people who really DO need a size 1? What are we going to do in 10 years? Perhaps one of my most annoying moments came a few months ago when I tried to get some El Cheapo shoes from Payless (trust me, that is NOT a place I frequent).

Well, I wear a 6 on average, far from an excessively small shoe. So I'm searching and searching and I finally see the size I need -- in the girls section!!!! I can't believe that's what the world has come to.

Mine is not a sad short story (not anymore) but more one of annoyance. I really wish people would stop assuming that everyone is big. Not average sized - BIG. It's just not the case.

What do you think of Patience's story? Can you relate to her? Does your culture's beauty myth lean more towards petiteness or non-petiteness?

An Email from Debbie on being under 5 feet

I received the following e-mail from a reader named Debbie recently. Debbie is 4'10".:

I am has they put it a short statured woman.I am 45 years old and always struggled with my height.Mainly because i was alot shorter than my sisters and brother. Now i came from average sized parents.

MUM-------5'8
DAD-------5'8
Me--------4'10
Y.SISTER--5'9
Y.SISTER--5'8
Y.BROTHER-6'2

Now I was the oldest out of all of us and I couldn't handle it having to watch my sisters and brother outgrow me. I couldn't wear none of my sisters clothes without cutting about 6 ins off them. I apparently got my height from my grandmother. She was 5'0 so she even had a good couple of ins. on me. When I was younger I had to stick with clothes in the childrens dept while my sisters could go anywhere. I must admit that the choice is alot better than years ago there are alot more shops to choose from. I did buy a pair of trousers from next and they had to have 8 ins off and that was their short length. My mum has always altered my clothes which helps alot.I do remember ordering uniform from the bank when I was working there and when it came to measuring me nothing fitted. I had to take the whole lot home for my mum to alter. I did mention if anyone else had the problem only to be told no. I mean I ain't the only person who is this short, surely. The nearest I saw to my height was a woman who was 5'0. She said her clothes had to be altered as well.

I mean it's not nice being this height and having to wear kids' clothes has well. I don't know if there are any people as short has me on this website. I would like to know what they do when buying clothes.

My aunt is quite short 4'11 though and she has the same trouble has me so sometimes we shop together which is nice. I have rather large feet like a size 6 whereas my aunt has small feet she is only a size 1 (Cynthia's note: UK Size 1??). She has it harder than me buying shoes which is a pain sometimes. Let me have your thoughts is there are rather short people like me.

So any readers shorter than 5'0"? If so, what kind of experiences have you had? Do you have advice for Debbie?

Shorty Stories: Jessica's Modeling Story

Jessica sent me her Shorty Story over a year ago about an experience she had at a big modeling agency:

I'm 5'1" and around a 00P. I've always wanted to be a model, since I was like 4 and I always said that when I grew up, I was going to be a high fashion model and model for Coco Chanel! Well recently, I tried out for Ford Models - like THE hugest modeling company there is! So I walked in, and sat down. The woman who was interviewing me walked in after I had sat down so she couldnt tell how tall i was. She was about to sign me, just from seeing my face and hair.

For more of the story, please click here

Just out of curiousity to readers: Should Jessica have even gone to the open call? After all, fashion modeling is still overwhelmingly for very tall, skinny, young looking girls. And if you try to talk so-called "experts" out of it, they'll just give you that stupid "clothes need to look like they're on hangers" speech. It's funny that they do, because they're supposed to be creative, and creative people usually like to think outside of the box. They don't even consider that there are designers who make specialty sizes out there (wasn't plus sizes a challenge on Project Runway? A challenge that many contestants had trouble with?)

Becky on being short

Hi guys!

For the first time in several months, I received a Shorty Story for my main site. The writer, 5'0" Becky, talks about being her height and how the world views her, as a petite woman. I'm sure that Shorty Stories readers have experienced the same thing, including people mistaking you for being younger, having trouble finding clothes, etc, etc...Below is an excerpt from Becky where she talks about people find her height funny, in a very insensitive way:

My Height = Comedy:

So many times, I've been picked on for being short. I dress young because that’s what fits. I'll never forget this: It was a cold snowy day and i bundled up with all the extras. I get on the bus to go to the mall, the bus driver asked me, "What happened, no school?", I told him, "no, I’m in college." He started laughing so hard that when I sat in the back of the bus, he was still laughing. I was so hurt that I was seen as a mere joke. I cant help myself that I'm small and look young. I'm glad that I'll look young when I get old but as of right now, I want to be taken seriously everywhere I go.
