What I Wore on TV this morning...

Top:  Tahari, size 0
Skirt: Ann Taylor, size 0P (from 2009)
Belt: Boutique Jacob, XS
Boots:  As usual, Donald J. Pliner, size 5

As the founder and webitor-in-chief of DelectablyChic!, I had the opportunity to go back on a little local community cable channel show called daytime Toronto to speak about proper party etiquette.  Unlike my last appearance in November, I wore a blouse and skirt rather than a dress, making it easier to mike me.  The show went pretty well, especially compared to last time, when I was dragged on TV while my show partner was still getting her hair and make-up done (we both looked HORRIBLE, by the way).  The show aired live this morning at 10 am (December 23) and will be on again at midnight.  However, you have to have Rogers Cable service and live in the 416 dialling area to see it.

On Using Non-Models at Fashion Shows

Last week was New York Fashion Week.  While most shows featured tall, slim and young professional models, Ann Taylor chose to use its employees. Though, for the most part, the women featured were quite slim, it was more realistic - none of the ladies looked like they have been starving for days.  In addition, the women were closer in age to the clientele.  Honestly, who really wants to wear clothing targetting a 30 year old, yet modelled by someone who is 15?  I still don't quite understand designers.  I guess even the ones who want to use 30 year olds use the teenagers, if not only because of availablility, but also because of peer pressure. If they dare to do something different, people will criticize (this has happened before - a Canadian designer used "real women" as models at a show back in 2009 and some of the more traditional fashion writers apparently didn't like it very much.  Whatever.  I kind of like the idea of this.  It makes it easier for me, the client and wearer to see what things would look like on someone my shape (which is also why I like seeing short celebrities).

However, one thing I have issues with when it comes to size is, of course, the lack of talk on height.  I am not actually sure how tall the women in the Ann Taylor show are (I've asked and will let everyone know when I hear back).  I do know, however, that both Ann Taylor and the LOFT division have featured employees of all heights modelling various styles on their Facebook pages.  They generally list not only the employee's size, but also her height.  A good thing, since the FB user would have a better idea of how and what looks good on them if they're around that size.  I imagine the women would have been of different heights, since they were modelling a current collection, rather than the spring/summer.  It would have been nice to know whether there were actually any petite women, though.  But it seems that media releases on "real people" models never talk about this.

Would you like to see more brands and designers feature non-professional models?  I do, but I don't know if the rest of the industry would think that's such a great idea.  It might just be too risky (and some would complain about not wanting to see 200 lb women on the runway.  The thing is, for many brands, the "typical" client isn't 200+ lb and a size 20.  She's more likely 130 lb and maybe a size 8 or 10.  She's also closer to 5'5" or so than 5'10").  5'5" and a size 8 is hardly FAT and SCARY.  It's realistic and slim.    Also, I think The Powers that Be are often much too out of touch with the clientele, and while some may think that clothes should be the main focus, clientele often have trouble imagining what things look like on them if the model's shape is nothing like theirs.  But of course, that's just me

Don't You Wish There was Colour MORE Selection for us?

The Perfect V-Neck T from Ann Taylor: FOURTEEN choices for regular sizes

FOUR for Petites.

And not to mention that the regular size shirt, which is in "Tapestry" isn't even available in petite sizes.

That's not the only top at Ann Taylor guilty of this issue. Take a look at this:

vs the petite cut:

And from Ann Taylor's sister brand, LOFT:

versus the petite:

I don't think it's because certain shades are sold out - especially with the t-shirts.  It's just that they aren't making as many colours for petites.  Ann Taylor and its sister brand, LOFT, seem to be the most guilty of this.  I want to know who makes the colour decisions and why petite sizes tend to keep only the most boring shades.  Can't they give us at least ONE good colour?  Or is this another case of "petites shouldn't really be fashionistas.  Let's just get them to do our accounting/legal work/whatever office job."

Online Shopping Poll Results

Last month, Shorty Stories asked its readers whether they liked shopping online (for clothes). The results are in and...
Just over half of the readers (at 51%) shop online because it's the only way to get clothes which fit petite figures (did you hear that, stores? It's hard to go to B&M locations to buy clothes for us!!! Get with it!)
11% would LIKE to shop online, but are unable to, because the stores do not deliver outside of the US (again, did you hear that??? We're looking at you, Ann Taylor/LOFT and Gap/Banana/Old Navy!)
29% do not shop online, because they like trying things on
7% chose other.
What do you think of these results?

Ann Taylor no longer carrying 00P in stores

Stories about Ann Taylor not carrying size 16 in stores have been all over the Internet. But did you know that they're not selling 00P either? For the exact same reason - lack of sales. The note was posted on their Facebook page today. Not sure if this is the same case with LOFT. I was never able to find 00P at the Ann Taylor store on Madision and 60th in New York anyway (though 00P was easier to find at LOFT).

Cute Spring Dresses at Ann Taylor and Ann Taylor Loft

As the weather warms up, many women are exchanging their jeans and heavy sweaters for dresses. Ann Taylor (and Ann Taylor Loft) has been a favourite of mine for petite selection - unlike many other brands, it's not granny-like and the selection at brick-and-mortar stores with a petite section is reasonable. However, as someone who lives in Canada, going to Ann Taylor is a treat as there are no stores north of the border. And unlike J.Crew and Anthropologie, online ordering isn't possible. :(

As of April 16, 2008, my favourite dresses from Ann Taylor are:

Multi Circle Print Dress

Flower Medallion Pique Shift Dress

Christine Double V-Neck Dress (this one is for more formal occasions)

Ann Taylor Loft has some amazing dresses too. The ones I like are:

Petite Strapless Print Dress With Obi Belt

Petite V-Neck Floral Jersey Dress

I also have some favourites that are now on sale. At Ann Taylor, the dress I like most is:

Petite Floral Swirl Print Dress (as of today, the smallest available size online is an 8P)

My favourite at Loft is:

Petite Printed Surplice Neck Dress (this one is almost gone! The only size left is a 12P)

I guess I need to make a trip down to the US soon!
