Old, dirty, broken and unappreciated. 
This is what I started with. Years of dust and abuse. Dark ugly stain. Fortunately, it was only one layer of dark ugly stain. I started with the earth friendly stuff...then I opted for stuff that actually works.
I cleaned up and stripped and cleaned the brass hardware. All of it was still in good shape which is good because it's so old, they don't make stuff like it anymore.
After numerous weekends and a lot of elbow grease. Completely stripped and sanded and ready to go to the Amish furniture repairman for staining and finish. Back from the Amish man's workshop. All it needs now is the shelf glass and protective glass top.
